Online mastering alternative: what to check before you pay

Most online mastering works the same way. You upload a file, you wait, you download a result. If it doesn't sound the way you hoped, your options are to accept it or start over. There's no dial to turn and nothing to listen to while you decide.

If you landed here searching for a LANDR alternative, an eMastered alternative, or simply online mastering without a subscription, the five questions below are the ones worth asking before you pay anyone — us included. Prices and features change, so check the current answers on each provider's own site rather than taking anyone's word for it.

Five questions worth asking

1. Can you hear the finished master before you pay?

Not a 30-second snippet, not a watermarked preview with noise over it. The actual master, end to end. If you can't judge the result before paying, you're buying blind.

2. Can you change how it sounds — and hear the change while you make it?

This separates services more than price does. Most tools give you one result from one algorithm. If it's too bright, too soft or too squashed for your track, you're stuck with it. Ask whether you can adjust anything at all, and whether you have to re-render and wait each time you try something.

3. Do you need an account before you can try it?

Plenty of services put a signup wall in front of the thing you came to evaluate. A reasonable business decision — but it means you hand over an email address before you know whether the output is any good.

4. What does a single master cost, and can you buy just one?

If you release four tracks a year, a monthly subscription is the wrong shape. If you release monthly, it's the right one. Check whether the provider offers both, and what happens to unused credits.

5. If it isn't right, can you render again without paying again?

Ask specifically. Some services count every render against your quota, which quietly punishes you for iterating — exactly the thing that gets you a better master.

How ZERRRO Engine answers these

Rather than describe it, here is what you actually get. First, the part most services don't have — controls you can move while the track plays:

Shape your sound screen in ZERRRO Engine with genre presets, sub-genre chips, a character setting and a strength slider, applied live over the waveform
Genre, sub-genre, character, strength. Every change is audible immediately — there is no render between you and the next idea.

And then the decision itself, with the numbers in front of you and the A/B set to matched loudness — you only pay once you have heard it:

Master preview in ZERRRO Engine with integrated loudness, true peak, loudness range and dynamics, an A/B toggle against the original mix, and an unlock button
The full master, end to end, before any payment. Unlock only if you keep it.
  • Hear it first. The full master preview is free, always. Not a launch promotion or a trial period — it's how the product works.
  • Shape it while it plays. Pick a genre preset, set a character, move the EQ dots, and you hear the result as you go.
  • A/B against your own mix at matched loudness, so you're judging the master rather than the volume difference.
  • No signup, no install, no card to reach the preview. It runs in the browser.
  • Re-render for free. Change anything, render again, as often as you like. You pay when you keep one.
  • Buy one or subscribe. A single master is €2,99. Subscriptions run €4,90 a month for three masters, €9,90 for ten, €19,90 for unlimited.
  • A premaster check before anything else — format, true peak, clipping, loudness and BPM — so you find out about a clipped bounce before you master it.

What it isn't

It isn't a human mastering engineer. If your mix has problems that mastering can't fix — a muddy low end, a harsh vocal, phase issues — no automated service will solve that, and ours won't either. It also isn't a stem mastering service. It takes your stereo pre-master and works on that.

We'd rather you knew that before you spend twenty minutes on it than after.

You don't need a finished track to try it

Reading this on a phone? Your pre-master is probably on another machine. There are demo tracks in the tool — open it, drag the character, hear what changes. About a minute.
